Error upgrading to 4.0.4

Post by alovhaug » Mon Aug 20, 2007 11:00 am

I am trying to upgrade my Vault server (Windows 2000 Server) from 3.5.2 to 4.0.4. When I run the installation setup, I get the following error:

Error 1303. The installation has insufficient privileges to access this directory:
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\VaultService\VaultShadowFolder. The installation cannot continue. Log on as administrator or contact your system administrator.

I have tried using two different accounts that both have admin rights, but it is true - both accounts do not have access to this folder. I don't use shadow folders, so I'm thinking that I can just point it to a new installation folder instead of using the default one. Should that be okay? Is there any reason that upgrading in this manner is a bad idea?

Thanks.

There may be a problem with the way permissions are set up on that machine. You can install the Vault Service to a different directory, though the installer may still run into difficulty setting permissions on other folders Vault Server needs access to, if the installer doesn't have full Admin access to the file system.

I'd suggest uninstalling, restoring a good backup of the 3.5.2 database and reinstalling as a first step.

This installation of Vault is running in a virtual machine, and it has had some weird permissions issues the last few months. (There was some evidence of hacking, and the main "administrator" account has been inaccessible.) Based on your response, I think it is time to create a new virtual machine and move my data over. I will create the new virtual machine, install Vault 3.5.2 and restore my database. Then, I will try upgrading to 4.0.4 and see how that goes.

If I run into further problems, I will let you know. Thanks.

Sounds like a good plan.

Installing Vault but warning says "Fortress"

Post by alovhaug » Tue Aug 21, 2007 10:17 am

Okay, I rebuilt my virtual machine, installed 3.5.2, and restored my 3.5.2 database. Everything seemed to be good to go.

Now I am installing 4.0.4. The name of the downloaded file is "VaultServer_4_0_4_15848.msi". It is installing fine so far. But when I got to the warning messages about changing the permissions, here's what it says:
In order for Vault to run properly, NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE must have read/write permissions to the following folders:
C:\xxxxx
....

We can make these changes right now or you can make the changes manually after we finish installing Fortress.
The title says Vault and so does the first sentence, so I am guessing it is just a cosmetic "bug". But it did throw me for a loop at first, and made me wonder if I had downloaded the wrong server.

Just thought you'd want to know...

Sorry about that. Vault and Fortress share much of the same code and though the installer should be aware of what it's installing, there are a few spots we seem to have missed.

I'll log a bug on this.
