I just upgraded one of our major solutions to the 2005 client last night. Today after accdently checking out the solution file, and then undoing the checkout I received the error "timeout due abandoned mutex", the login dialog then came up. When I tried to log in, visual studio locked up, and threw a generic "application has stopped responding" error, and closed.
So far I haven't been able to reproduce the problem reliably, but it has happened more than once. restarting visual studio caused the solutions binding to be offline. When I used the "online" menu the solution opened up just fine, my changes were undone, but there was an "add file" pending change operation stuck in the queue that i had to kill.
I'll let you know when/if I find a reliable way to reproduce this.
