Copying a Label

Post by edj » Tue Jul 03, 2007 1:02 am

Hi

I read in several older posts that version 4 would/might have the option to copy a label. But I can not find any information of this in the releasenotes. Is this basic functionallity still missing?

If so, please get it implemented soon, since we find no other way of keeping track of changes to labels.

Situation:
Version MyApp 4.0 is labeled "4.0" and released. Delelopment continues....
A week later we need to release a version 4.0 again, but one file has to be promoted to a newer version. (4.0.0.1).
This can not be done without "changing" the original 4.0.
We would lige to copy the 4.0 label and then promote the file.

Of cause we gan "Get" the 4.0 Label and then get the newer version of the file, but then there is no track og this action in Vault. So this is not an option.

This missing feature is very importent for us.

PS. One other thing: In "Show Labels" we can see the number of "Changes" made to a Label..... but where do wee see which changes that were made?

So that I have a better point of reference, do you have some of those links you can post? Knowing when it was posted and by whom and the finer details of what was requested will help.

Hi
See the last reply in this thread:
http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic.php?t=395

And there were at few others allso, where the topic was discussed. But I can not remember which ones.
The thread-title can sometimes be misleading, so they are not easy to find again, since I unable to search the forum for specific word combinations, - i.e. "copy a label", "copying a label", "share a label"

We would be very happy if this feature was implemented soon.
Meanwhile, do you have any workarrounds to this issue?

PS: Great product though! We like much more than SourceSafe (except for this missing feature). In SourceSafe I would share a shared project and then "pin" the changed files. But being able to copy a label and then promote certain files would be just as good.

PPS: What about promotion-history. Where do we see what files has been promoted. We kan only find the counter in the column "Changes".

The label a label feature didn't make it into 4.0. It will need to be rescheduled, but I don't have any scheduling information on it at this time.

What I think is going to serve you well for doing without that feature is just applying multiple labels. You can apply multiple labels to one file or a set of files. That means if you have one label continually changing, you can have another label that never changes and both can be on the same files at the same time.

Another option is to consider using branches. We have a Best Practices article on branches and labels here: http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic.php?t=9 and http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic.php?t=193.

Tracking of label promotion was a very recent feature request. I can add your "vote" to it and the same with the label a label request to add more weight to those requests.

I don't believe label promotion was originally intended to be a regularly used thing. Until this gets implemented, you might be better served by adding more labels or consider branching.
