Can I select multiple projects in SourceSafe Import Tool?

Post by davenovak » Wed Jan 17, 2007 7:12 am

Is there any way for me to select multiple source projects in the SourceSafe Import Tool? Once I get to the Select Project page in the import wizard it seems as though I can only select the root project $/ (i.e., all projects) or just 1 particular project off of the root. However, in my case, I would like to select 3 or 4 projects off of the root. Is this possible? Multiple selection via Ctrl+click did not seem to work.

I realize that I could do multiple imports, but the problem with that is that any file shares between projects would then be broken.

Any suggestions?

Is going up one more level in folder structure an option? You can always delete and obliterate things you don't want after the import.

We have a feature request for the functionality you are trying for and I can add your "vote" to that request.

Not really. The problem is that I have like 50 folders off of $/ and I only want to keep about 4 of them. My import would take probably a week and then I'd spend even more time deleting unwanted branches.

I have a workaround for this, but it too takes time (though still much faster than importing all). What I do is:
  • 1. Use SSARC to backup just the 4 folders off of root that I care about.
    2. Use SSRESTOR to restore the backup to a new, temporary database.
    3. Import everything in this temporary SS database into Vault.
Though this "works", it adds about a day to the process for a large database. I would prefer having a more flexible import system, though I consider this request a "wish list" item more than an urgent need.
