Currently running version 3.5.3 should we upgrade?

Post by short1uk » Fri Sep 29, 2006 2:42 am

Hey all,

We are currently running version 3.5.3 and to be frank its causing us so many problems I feel like putting the server in the bin.

Are the newer version any better?

I am constantly restarting the service, getting reports of slowness and we are thinking about finding an alternative.

Does anyone think the new version are better?

Thanks

It depends on the type of problems you are having.

SOS performance is affected by network configuration, bandwidth available to remote clients, hardware resources, and also the version of VSS you are using to supply the automation component that SOS uses to communicate with the VSS database.

Review this KB article about optimal SOS performance, to see if there's anything you haven't tried yet..

We can help with troubleshooting of specific issues if you wish.

The SOS 4.2 server and 3.5.3 can be installed on the same server machine. You can give it a try in your environment -- even point it to the same VSS database(s). Users can install a 4.2 client to a different directory than 3.5.3 for this test.

Another option to consider is Vault, SourceGear's replacement for VSS. It has remote connectivity built in, uses SQL Server for a database, and is a complete product that we have developed. Vault has thousands of happy users.

SourceOffSite 4.2 is a complete re-write for the Server. Also, it supports Visual SourceSafe 2005 and Visual Studio 2005. Things have improved since SourceOffSite 3.5.

Note - there may be other issues that you may encounter - for instance, due to locking issues you still should only run one instance of the SourceOffSite client per server.

If you want to try out SourceOffSite 4.2, contact our sales department - http://www.sourcegear.com/company/contact.html about an extended SourceOffSite 4.2 Demo license to cover your users. Mention this post in your email.
