Easier way to obliterate ?

Post by Tri » Sat Jan 07, 2006 3:37 pm

Vaut Server 3.16

The Obliterate operation is no faster than before (which means VERY time consuming). After a selecting the list of files / folders to obliterate, there is a very long wait before the confirmation dialog appears. And sometimes, it fails because of FailDBRead error or because of file dependency. It is so frustrating to do obliterate that we actually rarely do it. And most of the files deleted are because we cannot move folders across repositories.

Can you please redesign the obliterate function to fulfill these scenarios:

- Unattended obliterate: obliterate all files / folders which are "obliteratable". In case of failure due to conditions specific to a file, log it and CONTINUE the operation.

- In the screen to select items to be obliterate. Give a checkbox "Don't ask for confirmation". Because usually the confirmation dialog box is displayed after about 30 minutes and so far, we always answer yes. When we open Admin Tool, select Obliterate, select repository, wait a long time for the items to be displayed, read and select the items to oliterate, generally we do want to obliterate them (no need to wait another 30 minutes to confirm yes).

- After a repository has been selected for obliterate. Display only the items which a obliterable. BTW, what are the point of displaying non-obliterable items for obliteration?!? This operation is extremely time consuming, if ever one non-obliterable item is selected, then the whole operation voids and everything must be restarted over again.

- Obliterate with lower and upper timestamp limits. Add time criteria in the obliterate condition. Example: obliterate the all items older than X months.

In the mean time, if you have some utilitilies for "easy" obliteration, please let us know.

Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the suggestions; I'll add them to our "make obliterate better" feature requests.

Obliterate continues to be a challenge, but we continue to work on improving it, and we hope you'll see better obliterate performance in Vault 4.0.

We don't have any easy utilities, sorry. At one point we thought about providing a script for quicker deletion of data, but decided it was too risky, as it could leave the database in a corrupted state. We've opted for slow but sure, rather than quick but sorry.
