SOS newb trying to migrate SOS to new server

Post by buschman » Wed Mar 17, 2004 2:11 pm

Hey Guys,

I was hoping someone could help me out with some technical details on how to move the SOS database or even if SOS has it's own seperate db. We are a software company and use VSS and SOS for our code. I've worked with VSS in the past, but never SOS. Are these two services tied together?

I'll be moving VSS over to our new file server this weekend. I'm wondering how to move over SOS as well? Any advice, links, or URLs that you think might be of use to me would be greatly appreciated.

i'm not certain i understand your question. are you asking how to import a vss database into vault? or is your question related to sourceoffsite?

My question is about sourceoffsite. Forgive if my question doesn't make complete sense. I'm not a programmer so I've never actually used SOS. I have used VSS and administered it in the past so I'm familiar with how to move that DB. What I don't know is if SOS and VSS are integrate. Are they completely seperate?

Regardless, I need to figure out how to move the SOS and/or VSS DBs to the new servers. Any advice on doing this would be really appreciated.

mike:

here's a guess -
find the directory where all vss/sos servers go to to access the srcsafe.ini file. now move up to the parent directory. copy that folder and all sub entries to the new machine.

My question is about sourceoffsite.
you might want to post this question on the sourceoffsite forum (

SOS does not have its own database; it uses the VSS database. SOS provides remote access to a VSS database.

SOS can be installed on same machine as the VSS database; or on another machine on the same LAN.

You can leave your SOS Server where it is and recofigure the path to the srcsafe.ini in the SOS server manager.

Or if you want to put the SOS Server on the same machine as the VSS database, I'd suggest you do a fresh install. This will install the SOS Server files and install the SOS Server service.

Then in the Databases tab of the SOS Server manager, browse to the srcsafe.ini file of your VSS database. If you were using encryption keys, regenerate these user keys, since the old ones will be tied to the old machine name.

And, as Jeff suggested, please post to the SOS forum in the future to eliminate confusion.
