Best way to "close" Vault?

What is the best way to "close"/shutdown the server? We'll be doing the 3.1.1 upgrade this weekend and I want to close Vault for checkin etc.

I've thought about shutting down IIS but that seems a bit drastic as it means shutting down non-Vault sites/services.

I do my upgrades on the weekends or during times when I know that nobody will be using Vault. It usually takes less than 5 minutes for me to upgrade the server. I suppose you could stop just the default web site instead of shutting down all of IIS before doing the upgrade.

There's no "off switch" for Vault, other than stopping the web service or SQL Server. And, as pointed out, that can affect other applications.

Here's a thought on locking out users: if you remove the licenses from the Vault Admin Tool, only the Admin will be able to log in.

We're using Win2003, and Vault has its own App Pool, so we just stop that App Pool.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think I like the App Pool shutdown best.
