Vault Import crash at user selection (no users shown)

We're considering purchasing Vault (migrating from VSS 5.0 and SourceOffsite) and I'm working with the demo version to get an in-office demo database working so we can evaluate the product. Alas, I'm having trouble importing any part of our old database. My error is very similar to the one in the thread http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic.php?t=3245.

I'm running Windows 2000 SP4, all the latest windowsupdate patches, MSDE 2000A (will be using XP Server, SQL Server, etc., if we choose this as our SCM solution). I can connect to the database, add projects, users, etc. with the vault client, leading me to believe the server (and client) installation went successfully.

I backed up a portion (500ish megs) of our SourceSafe repository and restored it to a new VS6.0c repository on the machine which was running the Vault client and server. I can open and use this new repository with the SourceSafe 6.0c client. Running Analyze.exe on the repository reports no errors or oddities. Upon trying to import the database with Vault import, everything goes well until the Pre-Scan Complete page appears, showing that "the data to be imported contains -1 files and 17708 projects. It is estimated that when the import begins, it will take 00:00:00 for completion." When the later Users dialog appears, there are no users listed in the right hand list. Picking either radio button (automatically create / let me map) causes an exception to occur. I've tried directly importing the (huge) 5.0 database, using the 6.0c client on this machine, but the same error occurs.

I've browsed the forum here and found nothing to point me to a solution. The above-linked message seems to describe the same problem. The ability to migrate our old repository (history) is key to our being able to consider Vault as a viable replacement for SourceSafe, so your swift response is appreciated.

The problem was that the user didn't do a real install of 6.0c, but just copied the binarys onto the box. Doing a real install fixed his problem.
