Share folder except for explicit files

I wonder if it's is possible to share a folder except for one or two files. The reason is that I have a folder that shoud be identical except for a single file. I tried to share the folder and then branch the file, but after checking out and editing and checking in the branched file. The same file in the folder which is was shared from show the status 'old'.

I guess I have to share at file level instead...

Yes, sharing at the file level is the only way to share a folder minus one file.
