Label Promotion

Post by kasti » Mon May 02, 2005 4:22 am

After some confusion why we could not pin to certain labels we started to read the vault documentation.

Everything became clear when we read the following:

Please Note: Once you promote a label, you can no longer apply commands to that label that require a unique version number, such as Share, Branch, or Pin.

Is this anything you guys are going to change soon? With this limitation label promotion (excellent feature) becomes useless to us.

Thanks,
Herbert.

It is not possible to branch a promoted label, and this is on our todo list - I'll add your vote for it.

However, sharing and pinning a folder do fundamentally require that it be done on a specific version of a folder. We could implement it such that instead of a folder share or a folder pin, that it share or pin each individual file within the folder. But, I'm not sure if that is what you'd want (plus, we'd have to figure make modifications to unshare and unpin so it could apply to individual items recursively, rather than the folder as a whole, so you wouldn't have to individually unpin every file).

I'll add these as feature requests, and see how many other people are running into the same problem. So far, most people have wanted branch from a promoted label, but not so much share and pin.
