History doesn't show checkout comment?

Post by Perry » Sun Jan 09, 2005 2:43 pm

In the History, it doesn't show the Checkout comment which I gave when I just checked out a file for exclusive access (or, I'm not checking the correct box somewhere?)

Here's three scenarios where I think I'd like to see that information in the history view (ie, here are three supporting arguments for making that information available in history, if it really isn't now):

#1)
I can't recall, or am not certain, or simply want to verify, what the scope of the changes that I said I was going to make when I checked out the file.

#2)
I find that another user has checked out a file for exclusive access, so I would like to know what they said (in Checkout Comment) that they are doing to the file.

#3)
We find a file that was checked out by someone who has gone on vacation or left the company, and now we would like all information possible on what was intended & done to that file.

History isn't really the place for checkout comments, because history only shows things that have actually changed the repository, and that doesn't happen until checkin time.

We do however show checkout comments in a file's properties, so if someone else has the file checked out, you can invoke Vault's properties on the file, and choose the "Checkout Status" tab to see what the checkout comment is for that checkout.

Ah, I did not know they were available under properties.

In fact, I'd quit using them as of today, because I didn't like the uncertainty of not being able to review my CheckOut comment, and being afraid that I'd check something out for one issue, and then switch priorities before checking it in, and not realize it because I couldn't review the CheckOut comment.

If that does happen, that something changed, or after debugging I did not find the result I expected, how do I change the CheckOut comment? (I have deduced that the CheckOut comment is actually applied as a file-level check-in comment.) The right-click Property/Status shows the CheckOut comment, but it appears to be read-only.

Within the Vault GUI client, highlight the item, and choose "Edit Item Comment" from the context menu of the selection.
