Is it possible to edit a history comment once the version has been checked in?

No, it's not possible to edit a comment in history with SourceOffSite. I believe this is a limitation of the SourceSafe Automation Component, which the SOS Server uses to communicate with the database.

You could use a VSS client to edit the comment.
