Many Vault label import actions

Post by Lex » Sun Dec 19, 2004 8:03 am

We are in the process of evaluating vault, as part of this we tried to import our current vss database. Before doing the import I followed the recommondations found on this site. Installed VSS 6.0c + hot fix, did run the analyse tool. There where no errors. Size of the VSS database is around 300 mb, we have many shared files.

Then we did the imports, at the screen showed about 90 exceptions.

The resulting vault database looked ok. We only have one serious problem, the history of each project contains a couple of thousands Add/Delete actions.
example:

Deleted xaprint_h_VSSImport1 Vault label import
Added xaprint_h_VSSImport1 Vault label import

In total the database contains approx 10000 files and now 50000 deleted files.

Is there a way to get rid of these ?
I have tried obliterate it in the admin tool but juat loading these item in the dialog box takes hours, then when I select them all an click on delete I get a server errors.

I really need a solution to this problem.

The files are added during label import in order to make sure that the label in Vault exactly matches the label in VSS. Sometimes, there is a version in a VSS label which doesn't match any version in VSS history. This can happen if the object is moved out from under the labeled object or deleted. In cases where Vault can't find the verion in VSS history that is in the label, it adds a new file with the right contents, puts it in the label and then deletes it. Obliterating these files will result in labels that no longer contain the right files. If you can look in your import log file, and identify which labels need theses files to be added, you can decide if you care that those labels exactly match the VSS labels. The import can't compromise, so we do everything we can to make sure that the labels match exactly.

Thanks for your quick answer. Still I dont know how to solve it. I have looked at the log file but its a 13 MB file and I don't really know what to look for. The point is all the add/delete entries in the history makes it practically unusable. the only way I can show the 'real' project history is by filtering the add/delete file actions, but then I miss the 'real' add/deletes as well.

hi, can we please have an option to not show the VSS-import-generated temp files in the deleted files list on the obliterate tab. maybe a checkbox or something?

i only deleted one file since finishing my fresh server install+import. i went to obliterate it. but to do that i have to wait AGES while the listview on the obliterate tab fills up with hundreds (maybe thousands) of import-generated temp files. then i have to go locate the one file that i want.

if youz could write a query that only returned the non-import-generated-temp-files when populating the list box, then i expect that would make the obliterate process much, much better for lots of people.

We have ideas to improve the interface for the obliterate tab of the admin tool, but it will be a while before we can get to it. Thanks for your suggestion.
