Feature Request: Integration with Windows Explorer

Post by Robin » Thu Aug 26, 2004 1:00 am

I know this is a big ask, well huge actually. What many of my clients need is a seemless "ie as idiot proof as possible" integration with windows explorer. The basic concept is we setup root level directories in explorer that map to branches in Vault. everything below that map is under constant conrtol of Vault. each time the user wants to work on a document the request that would normally go to the file system is passed through the explorer (or underlying file system) API.
each file would be checked out as it gets opened or alternatively is set readonly on everyone elses machine once one person has opened it for working on. Then when they close the application/release the file the new version is submitted to Vault behind the scenes.
Once again I know this is a big undertaking but it would be very very useful for all of my clients (and any new ones).

I have just spent the last god knows how long looking for a document one of their old employees wrote about a year ago and may have left on their local hard disk. Which is a common problem I score. if i could specify those directories as "Under Vault control" then we would have a point to look back at and not have to worry about this stuff.

Oh and before you ask, trying to teach them to use vault or any of the others is only a very obscure option because they wouldn't remember to do it (enough trouble finding the IE icon for the internet)

We've had a few request for an integrated shell which could enable items from Windows Explorer. I'll add your "vote" to the feature request in our database.

We have a number of other features to implement before we get to this one, though.

I have also used subversion in the past as my SCM and one of the greatest things I liked about it was the way that one of the clients tortoisesvn integrated into the explorer shell. I know that they also have a tortoise for CVS so it would be cool if someone could make one that works with vault. That would be something that would take almost all of my pains away.

definitely another vite for shell itnegration from me.

I have three designers that I would like have use vault, including some entry-level developers, and explorer integration (via context menu or soemthing similar to the tortise clients) would be great.

Thanks!

I agree with atweiker, however I do not like the icons that tortoisesvn uses through Explorer.

If I want to know which files I have checked out (or any other status) just provide a context menu function that will show a window which displays the status
Vault Client Version: 3.1.2.3511
.Net Framework Version: 1.1.4322.2300
Windows Server 2003 Service Pack: 1.0
Total Physical Memory: 1023.22 MB
