When you right-click a file in the Vault client and select 'Edit...' the file should be opened for editing, not performing the default action.
This can be duplicated by adding a Word Document Template file (*.dot) to the repository. When you 'Edit...' the template, it creates a new document file (*.doc) because it performs the default action for the file, which is 'New', instead of 'Open'.
I don't know how easy this is to perform in the general case, and it's easy enough to workaround. My thinking is that the client should check out the file and perform the 'Open' action, rather than the default action.

I originally wanted to display all of the available actions and let the user select the one they wanted to take, but couldn't figure out a good way to do it. I agree that you sometimes want to do the non-default action. I'll take a look at that for 2.1 to see if there's a good way to do it. Of course, if you're willing to tell me how to see the available verbs, it would be much easier.
