Compress attachments?

Post by Marcel » Wed Sep 01, 2010 5:35 am

Hi,

I was wondering if Fortress compresses item attachments? I guess it does, but wanted to know for sure.
Our attachments are mostly textual logfiles and can get very large. If Fortress does not compress them, it would be very benificial if our users would compress them first before adding them to Fortress.

Thanks

We do not currently compress attachments. I can put in a feature request if you'd like.

Maybe the SQL server compresses the data and thus the attachments? If that's not the case, then yes, please create a feature request for this. Maybe this should depend on an option which the user could check when addint attachments. Or it could depend on the file extension for example. Textual logfiles of e.g. 20MB can easily be compressed down under 2MB with e.g. ZIP. This can save considerable amount of disk space. :)

I'm not sure on SQL Server doing that inside the database. I don't think so, but it might be possible that a feature was added somewhere. I've logged a feature request for compression.
