Advice on the best way to revert back from 5.x to 4.x?

Post by robe070 » Wed Mar 03, 2010 10:46 pm

Hi,

We are planning our upgrade to 5.0.3 from 4.1.3. We would like to know our fallback strategy if we need to go back to 4.1.3. What steps should we take to get back to a working 4.1.3 server from an upgraded 5.0.3 server?
  • 1. Do we need to go back to the last 4.1.3 SQL Server backup of the 2 Vault databases?
    2. Do we just install 4.1.3 server and that will uninstall 5.0.3 as well?
    3. Anything else we need to consider?

When you install Vault 5.0, it will upgrade your database, and the database will no longer be compatible with Vault 4.1.3 server.

So if you need to revert, be sure to have a good backup of your 4.1.3 database. If there is a problem with the upgrade, you could revert by uninstalling Vault 5.0, dropping the 5.0 database, restoring the 4.1.3 database, then reinstalling Vault 4.1.3 server.

I followed those steps, apart from the drop. It didn't seem necessary as the restore completely overwrites the database. It seems to be working fine.

Is there a reason you put that 'drop' step in?

Some users might uninstall, leaving the database. Sometimes the install can't delete the database for some reason. I just wanted to make sure the old database was gone.
