Feature request/quest: "Virtual" label

Sometime we have the following task:

A developer refactors some parts of his code and don't wants those changes to be applied to the officel code branche yet. On the other side the developer should check in because we wants to perform diff's between his changes and because his work should be maintained and backed up at a central location. As the developer finishes his work he wants to make his changes "public".

How can I do this?

A feature like "Pin a version as the version being retrieved by get latest version" would be nice.

Developer A: Version 1, 2, 3 (marked as official), 4, 5
Developer B: Version 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Get latest version should retrive Version 3 of Developer A and 6 of developer B.
