Have you considered just branching $/trunk and during the branching process, you could name it $/branch? Or do you already have items under $/branch?
Is it the original you are concerned about preserving or a share under branches as well?
You could also branch the original folder and then create another share of that original folder rather than branching the share.

When you perform a branch on a share, it turns that share into a branch.
In the case you showed me, you have two options that I can see.

- 1) Branch each item under Mainline instead of branching at trunk, but skip the shared folder and then reshare MyCommon to the branch.
2) Branch Trunk, delete the branched MyCommon from Mainline, then reshare MyCommon to Mainline.
