version 2 upgrade to 3 path question

We have some 20 licenses for vault 2.0 that we may want to upgrade to 3.0. However, I need to test out 3.0 functionality before I proceed with the plan. I intended to take a backup of our 2.04 database and restore it to a new machine (a machine without the original installation of 2.04 webservice) and then run upgrade. Its not very easy to understand how to accomplish this. If I run the 3.0 server install on a machine that doesn't have the old version of vault it seems to assume that I need to install a new db as well. Is there a set of directions to show how to do this (how to upgrade a restored copy of the existing db while creating a new webservice?)

Basically, you first move a copy of the database to the new machine, then install Vault. The Vault 3.0.1 installer will automatically upgrade your 2.0.6 database.
