Performance

We're doing an eval of SOS to bring a remote site on-line, and having a significant performance problem.

It is SLLLLLOOW. We have SOS server running on a separate machine than our repositories (policy, can't change). We also have an antivirus client running on the SOS server (also policy, can't change, scans ALL files). We have extensive and deep VSS trees in all of our repositories.

In one test, just on our local LAN, using the base VSS client (separate machine from the VSS server) took 70 seconds. The same get-latest-version took 15 *minutes* with SOS, half that time to generate the file list, the other half for retrieval.

Is there any way to improve this?

SOS will always be slightly slower on the LAN, since the SOS Server must communicate via the SourceSafe automation component to access the VSS database. SOS speed comparisons are with VSS over the Internet.

Real-time anti-virus protection can cause a big performance hit. This is an issue with VSS as well as SOS.
