Wrong functionalty: Add Files/Folders

Post by Thomas Linder Puls » Tue Dec 14, 2004 9:22 am

The new form "Add Files/Folders" looks very nice, and the tree-control is very good.

But I am afraid that I disagree completely with the functionality.

My project tree and my working folder must always have the same stucture, therefore it is completely nonsense to add a file to a different place in the structure.

I.e. adding files from the tree should add them in the corresponding place, not in the place where I opened the form.

Should I really want to move something to another place, then I would surely do so on my disk first (so that I can validae the structure before commiting it to vault) and first then add it to vault.

I know that source safe is euqally silly about this, but that does not make it better.

I think the new "Detect New Files to Add" command is what you want (which should be just below Add Files/Folders). It will add files in the right place in the tree based on where your working folder is.

Note that it does have one limitation - it currently doesn't detect new folders to add.

Excellent. I suggest that you give this fnctionaliy a toolbar button (I find it much more useful than the "add" feature).

I have a few suggestions (besides detecting folders):
  • Make some kind of visual indication (for example color or icon) for whether a folder has something to add. So that I don't have to traverse the complete tree to find a few files.
  • Alternatively prne the tree so that it only includes thos parts that contains something to "add"
  • (An old suggestion:) Add a button for "Add & Commit", opposed to an "Add to Pending Change Set"
