I thought I remember seeing something about the ability to receive notifications by email when certain events happen, such as a file is checked in, deleted, added, etc. I can't find anything about that in the help. Was I thinking of another product, perhaps?
If so, is this something that might be in a future version?

It's too bad you don't have it, but it's good that you plan on adding it. We don't have that capability now, so it's not a loss, but not a gain either.
What I remember seeing must have been a VSS add-in or something.
There were two major features that I remember. The first was setting a one-time notification on a checked-out file, so that you could know when that person checked the file in, especially useful when working with exclusive checkouts, or on unmergable files. The second was setting a "permanent" notification on a specific file or project, to get a notification on selected actions.
