Upgrade both Vault App server and Database Server

Post by paul.rohde@wcrb.org » Thu Oct 31, 2013 12:25 pm

We are running Valut Standard 5.11 and Sqlserver 2005 (database on separate server). We are planning on upgrading Vault to versio 7.0 on a new App server and Sqlserver 2012 on a new database server. I would like some confirmation that my plan below will work.

Backup the SGMASTER and SGVAULT database from the Sql 2005 server and restore to the Sql 2012 server.

Run the install for Vault 7.0 on the new App server and select existing database

Point the Vault 7.0 install to the Sql 2012 server.

Upgrade the clients to version 7.0

Once everthing is working I can remove 5.11 from the old app server and the SGMASTER and SGVAULT databases from the old Sql 2005 database server.

My backout if this fails is to reinstall the 5.11 clients back and point them to the old 5.11 server.

Does this make sense and will this work?

That looks like a good path to take for the upgrade.

If your users use Vault integrated with Visual Studio, they will need to rebind their projects. There is a KB article on how to do that posted here: http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic ... 13&t=18956.

Beth, thanks for the confirmation, the upgrade went greate. Now one more question.

There are two new databases with Vault 7.0 sgnotify and sgvaultindex. What are these databases used for? Are these for new features?

I ask becuase I want to know if they need to be replicated?

The sgnotify database is for the Vault Notifications service.

The sgvaultindex database is for the Vault Find in Files service.

So it's save to upgrade directly from 5.1.1 to 7.0. How about 7.1?

Thank you, Ken

I've had a few customers make that leap, but generally we still recommend going through the major versions. In your case you'd install 6.1.0 and then install 7.1.0.
