Migrating to SQL 2012

Post by Xavier » Sat Aug 18, 2012 1:11 am

Hello

is it possible to install a fresh 2012 SQL Express, install vault 6; then import a backup in SQL 2012.
I would like to avoid direct import as there were some settings issue and ghost database in our current SQL server.

Thanks

Xavier

import a backup in SQL 2012
Not sure what you mean by "import." Are you referring to restoring a backup rather than attaching a detached copy of the database?

It's always best to have the databases in place in SQL Server before installing Vault. You can either restore a backup or attach the databases. The installer creates the associations between this installation and the databases, creates the database users, etc.

Now it's unclear for me :-)

We currently have Vault 5 and SQL 2008.

I wish to install SQL 2012 and not import any existing SQL 2008 database, to be sure to have a clean installation.
Do you have any procedure to do that.

I was thinking to do the following, but it doesn't match your answer:
1. Make a backup of the Vault 5 database using the admin menu.
2. Install SQL 2012, but not import anything
3. Install Vault 6
4. Import the Vault 5 database => It would have been clean, but would fail, right ?.

So could you please give me the steps to do that (SQL backup: how, ...).

Thanks

I was thinking to do the following, but it doesn't match your answer:
1. Make a backup of the Vault 5 database using the admin menu.
2. Install SQL 2012, but not import anything
3. Install Vault 6
4. Import the Vault 5 database => It would have been clean, but would fail, right ?.
This would fail because you would have a Vault 6 server but a Vault 5 database, and also because the Vault Server may not be able to connect to a database from a different SQL Server. The user accounts in the database would be from the other SQL Server.

Here's what I suggest if you want your Vault databases in SQL Server Express 2012.

1. Backup your databases. You can use the Vault Admin Web Client under Server Settings -> Backup.

2. Install SQL Server Express 2012

3. Restore the backups of your sgvault and sgmaster databases to SQL Server Express 2012. You can do this by using SQL Server Express Management Studio, right-clicking on Databases, and choosing the Restore Database command. Or, you can detach the databases from your SQL Server 2008 and attach them to SQL Server Express 2012.

4. Install Vault 6.0. In the SQL Server setup, use ./sqlexpress for the connection to SQL Server. SQL Express installs as an instance.

Let me know if you have any questions about this. If you'd like more help, I'd suggest we schedule a remote assist session where I can take a closer look. Email support at sourcegear.com, Attn: Linda. Please include a link to this forum post.

Hello

the server choice could not be changed, I had to uninstall SQL 2008 before to be able to selet the SQL 2012 instance.
Moreover it only worked with localhost, no instance name could be added though I created one (but it works the same on SQL Management).

Now almost everything is OK, but I cannot access e-mail settings: index is out of bounds.

I cannot access the KB for Find In Files index: http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic ... 21&t=19116 (not authorized)

Checking the 'Find in Files' box made the server not responding (may be because of index building, but a warning would be welcome).

May be those log can help:
----02/09/2012 12:39:52 --()-- The Plugin at http://127.0.0.1:443/VaultNotifyService ... rvice.asmx was not called with Event Login. Exception: La connexion sous-jacente a été fermée : Une erreur inattendue s'est produite lors de la réception.

Last information, when I went the second time to option after activating some notifications, the box never displayed (sourcegear client did not respond)

I can't figure out some of the error messages in the log. It's in French but with some strange characters. Do you have any idea of what these are trying to say?

Do you have a log for the Find in files index service? It would be in Windows\temp\sgvaultindex. if you do have a log, are there any errors that might be helpful?

The plugin URLs are in the SQL Server database. Look in the sgvault database in dbo.tblplugins.

Sorry, I accidently deleted your post.

Here's my response:
I've used 127.0.0.1, but the error remains.
but shouldn't it be

httpS://... ?
It all depends on your network configuration. Are you using only SSL to connect to the Vault Server? If so, the plugin services need to use SSL too. If IIS is using different ports than 80 or 443 (SSL default port), then the plugin URL needs to have the port number.

Try connecting to http://vaultdemo.sourcegear.com/VaultNo ... rvice.asmx .
This will show you the Notify service.

Now try to connect to http://<yourvaultservername_orIP>/VaultNotifyService/VaultNotifyService.asmx .

You will need to determine what works in your URL so that you can get to your own Notify service.

We haven't yet determined what causes the slowdown.

It could be a problem with the Vault toolbars in Visual Studio.

If you look in Visual Studio under View->Toolbars, what items are checked?

Hello

did you make any progress ?
Do you need more logs ?
This is very important issue for us. Hiding the toolbar is ok for everyone, but this is a lot of time lost for diffs, check in...

Some of your information about the Visual Studio slowdown is in our Help system and some is on the forum.

I emailed you some additional questions and we can continue troubleshooting by email, so all the the Visual Studio information will be in our Help system.
