Vault 5.0.x and Visual Studio 2012

Post by sgclark » Fri Jul 20, 2012 2:16 pm

We're still running version 5.0.x of standard Vault, integrated with Visual Studio 2005. We're anticipating moving to Visual Studio 2012 when it is released. Will you be supporting integration of VS2012 with vault 5.0.x or 5.1.x after VS2012 is released? Or will we have to move to the yet to be released Vault 6 to get VS2012 integration?

Any idea as to how much the the 6.0 upgrade will cost or is it too early to bring that up?

Thanks,

Full support for Visual Studio 2012 will come with Vault 6.0.

Some of our users have enabled integration by creating the necessary registry keys and have posted .reg files in this forum thread:

Note that we haven't tested Vault 5.1.2, so even if integration is enabled, there may be issues.

Hi Linda,
I understand that you have not yet tested the integration of 5.0.x/5.1.x with VS2012. I guess what I was really trying to find out is: 1) do you plan on testing the integration of these Vault versions with VS2012? and 2) based on the results of that testing, do you intend to support the integration of these Vault versions with VS2012? Or, are we likely going to be forced to update to 6.0 to get integration with VS2012.

Thanks,
Steve

Full support for VS 2012 will come in Vault 6, and that's where our testing efforts are focused. We're not planning to test VS 2012 with previous Vault releases.

Since operating systems, SQL Server, and developer tools like Visual Studio are constantly being updated by Microsoft, we must devote significant time and effort to update the latest Vault source control tools as well.

Although you may not be interested in some of Vault 6's new features, upgrading for compatibility with new technologies still has value.

OK, thanks for the clarification, Linda. Just wanted to know what options we have (or don't have  ).

Yes, these updates go hand-in-hand. However, I recently worked with a customer to upgrade their Vault installation from Vault Standard 5.1.2 to Vault Professional 6.0. The longest part of the upgrade was backing up their Vault databases. The Vault installation itself took about 15 minutes.

Of course, if you are moving to new hardware, OS's, and Visual Studio versions at the same time, the transition will take longer. Contact us if you need assistance with your upgrade.
