Migrating from 4.1 to 5.1

We are currently using Vault 4.1.1.18070 and have just purchased the upgrade to 5.1.2. We have around 20 users - some in one building and some in other locations. Getting everyone updated at the same time is going to be challenging. Is it possible to have everyone upgrade their clients first and then upgrade the server? i.e. can the 5.1 client use the 4.1 server? Also, I read a message on this forum that implied that the databases for 4.1 and 5.1 aren't compatible with one another. Will it be modified when we upgrade the server?

It's not possible for a Vault 5.1 client to connect to a 4.1 server.

The database will be modified by the Vault installer during the upgrade. Just make sure you backed up the sgvault and sgmaster databases prior to the upgrade. That way if you need to go back, you can use your backups to return.

That's what I was afraid of. Is there any way I can figure out about how long it will take to update/convert the server. This is going to be a matter of notifying everyone that it's going to be converted on a weekend and telling them to install the client on the same weekend. It probably depends on the size of the database. Our sgvault.mdf is around 105GB.

I also noticed that 5.1 doesn't support Windows 2000. We have one machine that still has Win2000. Will the client run on Windows 2000?

The Vault client can run on Windows 2000, but the Vault server can no longer run on Windows 2000.

The time to upgrade the Vault server can vary depending on how fast the equipment is. One way to help make a reasonable guess would be to start with how long it takes to backup your databases. Start there when trying to estimate the time needed.
