New Vault Client with old server

I'm been supplied Vault Client 3.1 but this made SSMS and VS2010 unstable. Uninstalling Vault Client fixed these issues.

I'm wondering if using the latest Vault Client will a) work, and b) affect anything on the server or any of the repositories to the detriment of the team?

Vault 3.1.x was released in 2006 and is not supported on newer versions of Windows, Internet Explorer or SSMS.

However, Vault 5.1.2, our latest release is compatible with newer OS's and technologies.
