Error 2753 trying to update from 5.0.4 to 5.1.0

Post by kadorken » Mon Nov 08, 2010 12:42 pm

Am trying to run the VaultServer64_5_1_0_19172.msi installation and it is encountering error 2753 during the 'remove applications' sequence, then aborting.

Now, the first time I tried this, I was prompted for the previous location of the 5_0_4_18845.msi file (we have moved servers so the original location of the install file for 5_0_4_18845 no longer exists; I changed the location to where the original install files were located to the new server location). Subsequently, I got the 2753 error.

Now trying to run the install always gets the 2753 error (and no prompt about where the 5_0_4 install file is located).

Do I have to manually remove vault and reinstall it to update?

You will want to perform a manual uninstall, but you don't have to install Vault 5.0.4 again prior to installing Vault 5.1.0. Make sure you have a current backup of your sgvault and sgmaster databases, and keep the databases where they are. Then when you install, it will upgrade them.

Instructions for manually uninstalling the Vault server can be found here: http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic.php?t=310. Make sure you make a backup of your registry before making changes to it.

If you still receive the same error when you try to install Vault 5.1.0, then the next option is a little more risky and I can't guarantee that you won't accidentally delete something other than one of key entries. You could return to the registry and search for the word SourceGear (provided you haven't named your machine or other components that name). You should be able to remove any folders by that name and any keys that appear to be solely for holding SourceGear details. If you have named your machine SourceGear or any other important items by that name (website, SQL instance, etc.), then don't perform the search and let me know. Normally people are told to never touch the registry, so if you are concerned about performing this, you can send an email to support at sourcegear.com (attn: Beth) with a link to this forum thread and we'll take this discussion offline.

After the registry is clean, you should be able to install Vault 5.1.0 and have it upgrade the database.

Okay, cleaned up the registry as much as possible. Installed 5.1.0 without further problems (except for discovering in the move to new SQL server that I had lost sysadmin privileges and the install aborted due to no permission on the master database - at least a clear message existed as to the problem; after reinstating sysadmin through the 'run sql server in single user mode' procedure, the install proceeded as normal)

Are you saying that you lost those privileges due to the registry changes or just that you needed to be given privileges to the new SQL Server for the install?

No, it was our other sysadmin cleaning up permissions on the sql server (unbeknowst to me) that removed my privileges. Nothing to do with the register cleanup.
