Source Safe Offsite SOS 4.02 hangs and needs to be restarted

Post by floyd » Mon Aug 16, 2004 1:09 pm

Hi everyone,

We are using SOS 4.02 and in the last 10 days this has happened twice.

At some point, the source safe server hangs and is unable to service any clients. I don't know what causes this but I suspect the problem is due to one of the clients forcibly closing connections?

I usually have to go to the SOS server and restart the service. This server is using encryption.

Following is the log from the latest crash on the server:

**********************************************************

8/12/2004 12:16:33 AM - Waiting for a connection....secure = True
8/12/2004 1:00:44 AM - Connection accepted from xxx.xxx.xx.xx:1483 on local address xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:8081, session id is 1.
8/12/2004 1:04:15 AM - Connection accepted from xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:1498 on local address xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:8081, session id is 2.
8/12/2004 1:08:27 AM - 2: Exception: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host
8/12/2004 1:11:52 AM - 1: Exception: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host
8/12/2004 1:18:01 AM - Connection accepted from xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:1536 on local address xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:8081, session id is 3.
8/12/2004 1:18:30 AM - 3: Exception: Index was outside the bounds of the array.
8/12/2004 1:18:33 AM - Connection accepted from xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:1537 on local address xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:8081, session id is 4.
Send failed: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host
8/12/2004 1:22:22 AM - 4: Exception: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

**********************************************************

This is really frustrating to us because we have teams from around the world using it and work pretty much stops when this crash happens.

Any help or pointers will be highly appreciated.

What version of VSS are you using? Specifically I'd like to know the version of the VSS ssapi.dll file.

See this KB article on how to determine the version:

See reply posted for topic "server hangs". We faced a similar problem & the registry setting solution worked for us.

Most SOS Server hangs are caused because concurrent connections expose a bug in the SourceSafe automaton component. The fix depends on which version of VSS you are using (see my post above).

If you're using 6.0c or earlier, try this:

http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic.php?t=1348

For 6.0d, this is the fix:
