Step by step for beginners

Post by Joseph » Sat Sep 26, 2009 6:25 am

I am using VSS and SourceSafe Version 8. I purchased Vault 5 for Home office. Now I have to configure Vault 5 (installed on Server 2003 and WS XP (client)).
Is there a step by step for setting up a repo. I tried to import (Rebind) my actual SourceSafe Project, but I am missing some information. Where could I get "how to do" instructions?

The following two links should have all the documentation you need:
Vault documentation
KB Article Index

In our Vault documentation is a Getting Started Guide.

For bringing in your VSS data, are you using the VSS hand-off, VSS import, or are you just adding your project to Vault from disk using Visual Studio?

I will use VVs hand-off. But the Web-Admin Program does not accept the path of my VSS scr*.ini file. The Webinterface is very small, I can not enlarge the windows part, where the information for the VSS has to be entered. Is this normal?

Are you using IE6? There have been problems with that version of internet explorer, but I think that will be fixed in Vault 5.0.2.

Is your srcsafe.ini on the same machine as your Vault server or on a different machine?

Is the folder that srcsafe.ini in a share?

The Hand-off Import is resolved. I had to use UNC and the shared name of the folder plus indication the srcsafe.ini in the path.

Now I am in VSS but I still do not see any vault. I can change the sourceControl but only in the SourceSafe database.

What should be the next step? Do i need some plugins or do I have to activate the client?

You won't see Vault listed in VSS. Are you talking about seeing it in Visual Studio, or are you still working on handing off code?

If you are handing off, then you would next click Operations and New Handoff to start the process of pulling your code over.

If you are finished with the handoff entirely and are actually talking about VS, then the Vault client needs to be installed on the same machine as VS. After the client is installed, open Visual Studio and go to Tools - Options - Source Control and you can select your provider there.

If you used VSS integrated with VS previously, then there is a process to changing the bindings so that the solution is bound to Vault instead of VSS. If you are at this point, let me know and I'll give steps for this.
