Fortress crashes with VB6 IDE

Post by jseidell » Tue Sep 29, 2009 11:11 am

I am currently in the process of updating my machine. So what I have done thus far is install a new OS on my machine (Windows 7) for my .NET development. I then created a virtual machine (Windows XP SP3) using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 for my legacy VB6 development. I have installed VB6 and Fortress on my virtual Windows XP machine. I have gone into Fortress and checked the option to 'Make default SCC provider' and under VB6 -> Tools I get the 'SourceGear Vault' sub-menu and appropriate options. However if I select any of the sub-menu items such as 'Create project from SourceGear Vault', 'Add Project to SourceGear Vault', or Options -> Advanced Options it crashes the entire IDE and pops a windows message of Visual Basic has crashed do you want to send an error report to microsoft. Otherwise, the Fortress client and VB6 IDE works fine, and opening Fortress through the IDE using Tools -> SourceGear Vault -> Run SourceGear Vault works fine.

I am currently running version 1.1.2 (18185) (Server and client), I do plan on updating to the new release soon, but this should be working because I have setup everything the same as my legacy machine, with exception that it is now running through a virtual machine.

Thanks,

Jason

The error seems to have something to do with the VaultIDE.dll, the Microsoft Error report contains a list of all the loaded modules and a stack dump. It also created a file named C:\Documents and Settings\Jason.Seidell\Local Settings\Temp\6a3e_appcompat.txt.

Can I post that file as an attachment or email it to you?

Can you post the error? Are you seeing that error in Event Viewer?

Could I have you start up some IDE client-side logging using the instructions in this KB article: http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic.php?p=5375. You will find an entry on that page for what to do for Visual Basic 6.

Yes it it is logging errors to the Event Viewer -> Application log. I will start the detailed logging and post that shortly here is one of the event viewer exceptions.

I followed the instructions to enable detailed logging for VB6, but I'm not getting a log file created. Checked both my temp directory @ C:\Documents and Settings\Jason.Seidell\Local Settings\Temp and C:\Windows\Temp. Also tried a reboot after creating the vb6.exe.config file. Still getting the same error and errors are logged to the event viewer.

There's 2 possible things I think this might point to; permissions or .NET framework. Was Fortress installed by you?

Is the VB6.exe.config file located in the same directory at vb6.exe? If not, place it there. Then close Vault an VS, and edit the VB6.exe.config file. Enter runtime information so that the first part of the file looks like this:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
configuration>
<startup>
<supportedRuntime version="v2.0.50727"/>
<requiredRuntime version="v2.0.50727" safemode="true"/>
</startup>
</configuration>

Now try using Visual Studio and Fortress. Any change? Do you have any logs? Those would be in %username%\local settings\temp.

Tried above comments still no detailed error log.

I did install as my user which is an active directory account, also member of Domain_Admin group, and tried adding user account to local administrator group, still no luck.

Checked permissions on SourceGear folder under Program Files and it lists local administrators with all permissions. I am trying and uninstall/re-install of .NET Framework and Fortress.

I got it working, thanks Beth you got me on the right track looking into the .NET Framework I believe.

I checked my Add/Remove programs and I noticed I did not manually install any of the .NET framework packages. Our WSUS server pushed the .NET service pack updates to the machine. (We have had previous issues where installing a .NET service pack without first installing the main redistributable package seems to install .NET and it works for the most part, but introduces occassional bugs.) So I completely uninstalled all versions/service packs of .NET. Rebooted. Then installed, .NET 1.1, .NET 2.0, and .NET 3.5 from the MS redistributable packages. Another reboot, repaired the Fortress installation, a final reboot for good measure, and presto it's working.

Thanks,
Jason Seidell
