Archiving like Sourcesafe

Post by ddouty@welis.com » Fri Feb 06, 2009 3:39 pm

We recently moved our VSS databases into Vault and we would like to archive history the way we did in Sourcesafe in order to reduce the size of the repository - (i.e. remove to an archive all data older than a certain date.). How can we accomplish this in Vault as there are no apparent archiving features in the Admin tool.

Vault has a Folder Export\Import Tool that can be used to archive folders to move from one repository/database to another. This tool is in the Vault GUI Client directory.

The Export\Import tool cannot select certain versions of history to archive, though -- it's an all or nothing proposition.

Are you concerned about performance, or is the repository too large to navigate?

We are concerned about both the performance and the size (due to the difficulty of backing up this much data offsite). We really do not need to keep history for very long. A few weeks would be sufficient. It is unforunate that we cannot offload and archive history on a regular ongoing basis.

A workaround might be to create a new repository from time to time and do a Get Latest from the old repository to the new one. Then when you no longer need the items in the old repository, you can delete the repository or export the repository into an export file, then delete the entire old repository (which is a much faster process than Obliterate, since there don't need to be a lot of integrity checks, as in Obliterate.)
