Upgrade from 3.1.8 to 4.1 + migrate to new server

Post by mcssoftware » Tue Apr 08, 2008 4:02 pm

We will be upgrading from 3.1.8 to 4.1.x and at the same time would like to migrate to a new server. What is the best/easiest method of doing this? I see that there are docs and forum threads related to upgrading on the same server, but not migration to a new one. I just want to make sure we follow the best course of action. If there is documentation you can point me to that explains the process for this scenario that would work too.

Also on a related note, we just purchased Vault 4.1 after letting our maint. slide on 3.1.8. So we now have a 4.1 license with maint. Is this the same as Gold support? I noticed that the license pages states that Gold support was phased out. Should I be posting in the Gold support forum or here?

Thanks,
Brian[i[/i]

You can post in either location.

For upgrading, you will get your best results by installing Vault 3.1.9 and then installing 4.1.1. You can upgrade either before or after moving the database. We have a KB article on moving the Vault server.

Thanks for the help - just to confirm I can do the following:

-backup 3.1.8 database on server A and restore to server B (new)
-run 3.1.9 install on server B
-run 4.1.1 install on server B

Thanks again...

Yes, provided the server is compatible with 3.1.9. Vista and Windows 2008 aren't supported with 3.1.9. It also needs a 32-bit server.

What is your server OS?

We are moving from a Windows 2000 Server to a Windows 2003 Server Web Edition - of course this means moving from IIS 5 to IIS 6 too I guess. I think that the only hang-up on the IIS side would be making certain that the ASP.NET module is loaded, correct? I see your FAQ here on this:

The SQL Server version will stay the same (SQL Server Express 2005 SP1). We will be staying on the 32-bit platform so no change there.

Does all this sounds OK?
