Trying to evaluate Vault - Can't get server running

Post by EricHarmon » Thu Feb 28, 2008 7:02 am

Hi, I downloaded Vault Server 4.1 and installed on a Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard machine. I did a typical install, used Machine login, entered the SQL Server login info and proceeded. I get the following:

After pressing [OK] the install will complete and launch a Web browser where you can enter license keys. Please log in with the user name and password that you supplied during this install.
Please press OK to continue installing the Client (if selected).

In particular, note the "Checking permissions on local folders...Failed". I'm not a network administrator - what do I need to do to address this error?

Also, after clicking OK, it tries to run the server admin program, but all I get in Internet Explorer is "Service Unavailable". I assume that's related to the local folders installation issue.

Could someone please help me with this so I can evaluate this product? Thanks in advance...

You should be logged in as an Admin for the machine when installing the server.

If setting folder permissions didn't work in the installer, NT Authority/Network Service account (which is the account used by default on 2003) needs read/write access to the following folders in order for the Server to work:

* the local directory containing the server installation files (by default, InetPub\wwwroot\VaultService).
* the directory where the log files are written (by default, WINNT\Temp). The log file location can be changed after installation, in the Vault Admin Tool under Server Options.
* the IIS process account's %userprofile%\Application Data \Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys or to %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys if the IIS process account does not have a user profile.
* the Vault Shadow Folder directory.
* Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\<version>\Temporary ASP.NET Files.

Some other things to check that cause failures:

Mary Jo,

I'm sorry, but could you please let me know where to go to check the access rights for NT Authority/Network Service account?

I am logged into the machine as adminstrator, but I don't have much experience setting up a server, so I don't really know where to check these settings.

Thanks...

If you go to the folders listed above and right click and choose "properties" there should be a security tab on that dialog where you can see and set the permissions for the folder.

If you don't see a security tab in the properties dialog, go to Tools->Folder Options->View and uncheck the "Use Simple File Sharing" option and that should display the security tab.

Mary Jo,

I got a network administrator today to look at my server with me and follow the instructions you provided. We checked all the folders and gave full access to NETWORK SERVICE for all of them. After uninstalling and reinstalling, I got the same error.

We then uninstalled and reinstalled, using both of the other installation options (System, and Custom) with the same results.

I am logged into the server as the administrator.

I looked at the other two documents you referenced - IIS is installed and configured properly, and Sharepoint isn't installer. This is a brand new install of Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2 and all updates applied, along with SQL Server 2005 with SP2 and all updates applied. Nothing else is installed on the computer.

I don't know what else to try. Is there a phone number I can call for pre-sales support to help me get the server installed and running? I'm looking to replace SourceSafe within the next 30 to 60 days and would like to make sure I can evaluate Vault (and possibly Fortress).

You can call our support phone number to get pre-sales support:
http://www.sourcegear.com/company/index.html

It may be helpful if you send us a screen shot of the server application error you are getting.

Also, there should be a log file in your %windir%\temp\sgvault directory that may have some clues as to what is going on.

Also there should be an install log in your %temp% directory (vault_install.log). If you send that it may give us some clues also.

If you want you can send me that stuff directly using the email button at the bottom of this message. If you include your phone number I will call you.
