Too many files on filesystem

Post by dennis » Fri Jan 11, 2008 10:20 am

Hi.

We are using SOS 4.2 on Windows Server 2003 Standard and have a
problem. Currently we have about 46GB on the filesystem in 1,223,141 files,
which are stored in 53 folders.

Everytime when I try to get a folder listing, the server hangs for a while
until the listing is finished. Our SosService.exe always produces 97-99%
CPU Load. Also our backup task is slow and takes about 8 hours.

Is there a way to organize the files on the filesystem in more folders?
Or maybe any other solution for this issue?

Regards,
Dennis

The part on the backup would be VSS. SOS doesn't do administration on the VSS database, it just makes use of it. I'm assuming you are using the VSS admin

You may wish to consider dividing things up into multiple VSS databases to make each one smaller. Microsoft recommends that VSS databases not go over 5GB. Even though there is not a stated limit, if you were to tell them how big yours is, the recommended size is the first thing they'll tell you. I think this will help immensely.

In order to find out more, I'd need to see an SOS Server Log, preferably in debug mode, and details on your clients and server to see what the resources are like.

Also, watch the event viewers in the clients and server for errors.
