How could I make the valut for remote access?

Post by chobo2 » Sat Dec 15, 2007 12:28 am

Hi

I currently work on 2 computers with visual studios 2005(might move to 2008 in a little while especially if my school gives me a free copy like they did with 2005).

Anyways I like how the program can integrate into vs(and probably soon 2008).

I of course like the fact that this program you guys have is free for a single user.

Now as I mentioned I work on 2 computers one home computer and one laptop. I went to setup a repository on a website so I can always get a current version of my code and be able to check in. I hate right now that when I use sourcesafe (was trying it out) that I have to take my copy of my work with me and I lose my version control since I am unable to figure out how to make a remote repository and no one seems to have ever tired to do something like that since I never get a responce on any of the forums I have tired.

If I can't get a website to host it or something like that I would settle on having my main computer act as a server since we I use my other computer it is usually at the same time and place(at my work) so I could just leave on my computer.

So could I get the vault setup to have a remote server or something like that. I would greatly perfer that it also be free(no hosting fees).

Also a step by step tutorial would be nice thanks.

Vault is designed to be used over the Internet. For this to work, the Vault Server needs to be on a web server that's accessible over the Internet. You also need SQL Server on the same machine or same LAN as the Vault Server.

Step-by-step instructions for install Vault Server are here:
http://www.sourcegear.com/vault/support/install1.html
These instructions are for Vault 3.5, but the options are the same for Vault 4.x.

As long as the port for website where Vault is installed is accessible over the Internet, Vault will be, too.

There are companies that host Vault Servers, like OrcsWeb and ABNHost:

But we don't know of anyone who offers free hosting.

Could I follow the same sets and setup my computer to act as the repository?

You can install the Vault server on your machine. If you are the only one using it, then there's no problem. If other users will be connecting, they need to be on the same LAN as your Vault Server machine, or the machine needs to be accessible over the Internet.
