Should I be using Vault or fortress?

Post by chobo2 » Wed Aug 15, 2007 4:11 pm

Hi

I could not find really a general question section so I just posted this here(feel free to move if this is not the best section)

What I want is to have something that integrates with Visual studios 2005 so I can keep track of my versions as I go through my projects so I can go back if I screw up.

My sites are just for fun to learn how to use asp.net and C# so I would be the only person using it(and to my understanding that would qualify me to use the program for free).

I just don't know which one I should be using I just want something simple since right now I am just need to keep track of my versions and that has a simple user interface.

So which one should I be using?

I also want to be keeping my versions on my hard-drives and not a server so I am not sure if that can be done or not.

Also could you point me to the direct download link I am kinda confused what thing I should download and install thanks.

Both Vault and Fortress are free for a single user.

If you don't need item/bug tracking integration, then Vault would be a good choice. If you're the only one using Vault, you don't need a server class machine -- you can install both client and server on WinXP or Vista.

You will need SQL Server for storing your Vault database, which contains your source code and version history. SQL Server 2005 Express is free from Microsoft.

Vault 4.0.x integrates with Visual Studio 2005. You can use either VS 2003-compatible integraton or VS 2005 integration if you are using VS 2005.

You can download Vault here:

The server installer will install both the client and server on your machine.
