It's possible that something is interfering with or garbling the communication between client and server and the server is getting an "unrecognized message".

Does this occur only when checking the properties of a file?

Is it only with one file or all files?

Does this only occur with one client or all clients? Try from another client if you haven't done so.

This happens on any file in this database. It happens from my client and all remote clients. The database is 2.5 GB and I run the latest the analyze
tool once a week. I have 7 other databases on 4 different servers and none of them exhibit this behavior, all databases are 6.0d (build 31222)

Are all the databases on the same server and/or in the same LAN?

What version of the VSS automation component is this SOS Server using? It may be 6.0d, but it also could be a different version:

Here's how to find out:

When I bring up properties\version for ssapi.dll this is what I have
6.0.31222.0

This is what the value of the reg key looks like

E:\SOURCE~1\VSS\win32\ssapi.dll

Should I remove this entry and re-register the .dll

Thanx

6.0.31222.0
I tried this version of the ssapi.dll with SOS 3.5.3, and properties were displayed with no problem.

This most likely is a problem with the specific database. For some reason, the automation component can't get the properties.

Did you run Analyze with the -f and -c parameters? Were any errors reported?

You could try another version of the VSS automation component:
This is the Microsoft Hotfix for 6.0c version:

I run analyze 1 time per week. I run it with -c -f

No errors or inconsistencies found.

Do you think rolling back a version of ssapi.dll might work?

I don't think I'd go older. Have you tried the 6.0c as suggested above??

I am curreny running on SP-6. which is 6d This hotfix mentioned is for 6c

Are you saying that the ssapi.dll is newer than what was in SP-6?

If this is true, then I will apply the hotfix.

Some users have reported problems with that version of the automation component. We've had fairly good luck with 6.0c, which is why it was suggested. After you are finished, double check to make sure the ssapi.dll is showing version that ends in 96.4.

The 6.0c Hotfix is older than version 31222. However newer versions of the ssapi.dll are not necessarily better than older versions. Sometimes a bug is fixed in a later version, but a new bug is introduced. As Beth said, we've had the best success with the 6.0c Hotfix and SOS.
