Was this project last under VSS for source control? If so, you may need to set Vault to be your default source control provider to make VS look to Vault.
Was it bound under Vault previously? A fresh Open from Source Control should only need to be done once to create the bindings.
Did he unbind from source control first (using Change Source Control) before trying a fresh open from source control?
Has he tried to check the items in after opening from source control?
Is the project a web project? If so, in Visual Studio 2005, the opening procedures are a little different.

Check-in is always done from source control in IDE.

Between this posting and the other one, I think we will need to take some of this off-line. A big thing here will be first to get all your bindings set correctly, and then many of the other oddities you see should disappear, and then we can deal with what's left.
