updating x,xxx file(s) to process...

I am using Vault 3.16 (3158) SG.
Whenever I launch my Visual Studio 2005 project (note Vault is my default source control provider), and click the "Pending CheckIn" tab, I see this

updating x,xxx file(s) to process.

For me, it takes about 10 minutes to wind down to 0.

Why is this happening and is there a solution?

That is what Visual Studio does to check to see if files are updated. That can't be disabled. It does that will every product as far as I know.
