Dreamweaver 8 IDE has many problems supporting Vault

Post by Pepper » Sat Nov 25, 2006 12:59 am

Currently, in order for me to check in/out files to the Vault repository, I need to switch to the 'Remote view' file list in Dreamweaver 8. However, I can't 'put' the files onto the 'Testing server' while in 'Remote view' (testing isn't done locally so I need to upload to server to see any changes). Instead I need to switch to the 'Testing server' view and only then am I able to 'put' the changed files onto this server. Once testing is complete, I need to switch back to 'Remote' view and 'Check In' the file.

Is there a way to check out a file, edit it, 'put' it to the 'Testing server', and check in without having to switch views? It would be nice if it was possible to check out/in a file and put it to the Testing server all from the 'Remote view'.

In addition, concerning the 'Local view' I found that after switching to it after viewing the 'Testing server', I can't check in or out files. The menus are grayed out. Instead I end up switching to the 'Remote view' to do this. At this point, I completely avoid using the 'Local view' (that's why it's not mentioned in the first paragraph above).

Thanks for any info.

Unfortunately, Dreamweaver does not allow checking in and out from the Testing server. You can only check out/in from the Local and Remote views.

What is worse, Dreamweaver seems to disconnect any Source Code plugin when switching to the Testing view. That would explain the disabled menu options when switching back to remote or local views. In my case, I created a profile at the Vault login, and set it to automatically connect with that profile, otherwise I had to keep logging back into Vault to re-enable the check-out/in menu items.

If that's the case, it seems misleading to include the following in the latest release notes of Vault:

"Macromedia Dreamweaver client - Full support of Vault within Macromedia's Dreamweaver IDE."

If Dreamweaver doesn't really support an environment where the 'Remote Server' and 'Testing Server' aren't the same, we are forced to constantly switch between views in order to check in/out and put files.

I realize this appears to be a problem with Dreamweaver and not Vault, but from a user's perspective, it's difficult to work with nonetheless.

It seems a bit silly to expect SourceGear to have to spell it out like this in the release notes: "Full support of Vault within Macromedia's Dreamweaver IDE, to the extent that the Dreamweaver IDE supports integration with source control providers." At least to me, it's fairly obvious that Vault can't change how Dreamweaver interacts with source control providers.

Dreamweaver's IDE has many problems supporting Vault

Post by Pepper » Tue Dec 12, 2006 5:44 pm

Well whether the problem is Dreamweaver's IDE or Vault, as a user, they don't work well together. When I say it's "misleading" to advertise Vault as having "Full support of Vault within Macromedia's Dreamweaver IDE", I'm saying that because Dreamweaver and Vault don't integrate well and I wouldn't suggest the setup to anyone. Try it yourself and you'll see.

To add to the above mentioned disappointment, Dreamweaver has started crashing everytime I select 'Remote view' to check out a file (when it connects with the Vault server). It happens frequently and I'm forced to repeatedly reconfigure the 'Remote view' to get it to work again.

Happy days :(
