Using SourceVault for Websites / WebApps

Post by christian_harper » Thu Oct 05, 2006 1:43 pm

I am attempting to setup SourceVault to do the following: Allow checkins/checkouts to a live staging website, containing both asp and asp.net source. This setup will closely emulate development without scc, and allows very fast development.

Some of the developers are working offsite, and can not map working directories to the folders on the webserver as they are not logged on to the local network.

We are using VS.NET2005 on the clients, and SourceVault 3.5.1 on SqlSvr2000 running Windows Server 2003.

I have tried setting up Shadow folders, and am unable to get that to work either.

As it sits right now, I have to manually Get Latest Version after every change to push the file out to the webserver (I have the working folder set to the folder mapped to the site in IIS6).

If anybody has any suggestions, or if I missed the answer in the forum, please let me know. I have been fighting this for three days.

Thanks,
Chris

It sounds like you are having everyone share a working folder on the server, and that can be a bad thing and have unexpected results. I believe our developers use virtual directories for their web development. See this thread: http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic.php?t=6818

On the shadow folders, here's a couple of KB articles we have on that:

Chris:

The most important post on that first thread is Microsoft's recommendations for Web Development - Web Projects and Source Control Integration in Visual Studio .NET.
