There seems to be a problem with the Source Safe automation component, ssapi.dll. This is supplied by the VSS Client and is used by the SOS Server to communicate with the VSS database.

How did you upgrade to VSS 6.0d? Did you install from disk, copy over the files, etc?

What version of the ssapi.dll is on the SOS Server machine? To find out, check this registry key for the path to the ssapi.dll file that the SOS Server is using:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{783CD4E4-9D54-11CF-B8EE-00608CC9A71F}\InprocServer32

There's a problem with the automation component -- but it's not clear what.

Have you tried uninstalling the VSS client on the SOS Server machine and reinstalling? Be sure you delete any VSS client directories before reinstalling -- we've found that sometimes a new installation doesn't fully overwrite an old one.

The error you are seeing in the log file "QueryInterface
for interface SourceSafeTypeLib.IVSSDatabase failed" is not an
SOS error directly, but comes from the SourceSafe Automation
component. It does not give use specific information about what is wrong, and there is no SOS setting to make this error more
useful.

At this point, the quickest solution would be to install the SOS
Server on a different machine in your LAN. You do NOT need to
move your VSS database; the SOS Server on the new machine can be
configured to use the existing database by entering its UNC path
in the SOS Server Manager. Also, make sure the SOS Server Service on the new machine runs as a Windows domain account so that it will have
the proper permission settings.

It's possible there's a problem with the registry. Often reinstalling the VSS Client will correct things, but you already tried that and it didn't
help. So at this point, moving the SOS Server to a different
machine is probably your quickest solution.

If you would like to spend more time troubleshooting this, we can. So far I've only seen parts of your SOS log file -- could you send me an entire log file -- that includes an SOS Server restart?

Have you tried re-installing VSS 6.0a, just on the SOS Server machine? This was working for you before.

There are no additional errors -- the database seems to be accessible by SOS.

Maybe there's a problem with the database. If you create a test VSS database on the same drive as the SOS Server machine, can you open it with SOS?

Is it possible to install the SourceOffSite server on a different machine? The SOS Server does not need to be on the same machine as the VSS datababase, just on the same LAN. Unless you have a very large development team, it can even be run on a workstation, like XP Pro.

Here are some steps that may repair the registry, if the registry is the problem.

First, browse to the location of the VSS Client on the SOS Server machine. In the VSS\Win32 directory, double-click on SSINT.EXE to open it, then click OK.

Next, from the command line, cd to the VSS Client win32 directory, where the ssapi.dll (automation component) should be. Run these commands to unregister then re-register the .dll:

regsvr32 /u ssapi.dll

regsvr32 ssapi.dll

Hope this helps.
