Get Latest and checked-Out files

I'm fairly new to the vault after begin a VSS users for many years. I'm having some trouble understanding what the vault does when you get latest on a folder with attempt automatic merge selected and that folder has one or more files already exclusively checked out and edited. I would expect that it wouldn't do ANYTHING with the checked-out files. Is this correct? I do know that if you select Overwrite it WILL overwrite the checked-out file.

Can someone give me a rundown on how get latest is supposed to behave with the options?
