\\<path to VSS database>\\srcsafe.ini does not exist!

This applies to SOS 4.x.

If the SOS Server does not start, check the log.txt file in the SourceOffSite Server directory.

You may see an entry like this:

4/12/2004 3:37:09 PM - Number of licenses configured: 10
4/12/2004 3:37:09 PM - \\\\<path configured for VSS database>\\srcsafe.ini does not exist!
4/12/2004 3:37:09 PM - Invalid or no databases to support.
4/12/2004 3:37:09 PM - Error starting up server. Stopping now....

The SOS Server Service is having a problem accessing the VSS Database.

The first thing to check is that the account running the SOS Server service has at least read/write access to the machine/drive/directory where the VSS database resides. This setting is in Control Panel->Admin Tools->Services->SourceOffSite 4->Properties->Logon. When the VSS database is on a different machine than the SOS Server, use a domain account for the Server service: domainname\username.

After that, make sure the account running the SOS Server service has read/write privileges on the SOS install directory. The default location is C:\Program Files.

If this appears to be in order, it could be that there is some minor database corruption that prevents the SOS Server Service from opening the database. To repair database corruption see:
