Shortcuts break every time I upgrade Vault

Post by montek » Sun Jul 09, 2006 5:57 am

This has been bothering me for, I dunno, a couple years now. =) Every time I do an server version upgrade, I end up reinstalling the client and admin tool to both of my computers. And every time, my "Quick Launch" shortcuts, where I've placed Vault because I use it so much, say "The parameter is incorrect." once I use them. I then have to delete the shortcuts, find the folders in my start menu, and recopy them to my Quick Launch bar.

Surely this isn't by design, right?

Do you create the shortcuts yourself or are these the shortcuts Vault Creates?

If you create the shortcuts yourself you will probably need to recreate the shortcuts if you re-install Vault.

However, the shortcuts Vault creates should work fine when you re-install or upgrade.

I *think* I just drag the shortcuts from my desktop to the Quick Launch area. I would never have created them myself. I might instead have dragged the ones from the Start folders. Either way, it should be pointing to the same path/file, so I don't understand why the shortcuts never work after an upgrade.

The shortcuts created by the Wise Installer seem to be tied to the actual binary .exe file. When an upgrade is performed, the installer replaces the Desktop shortcut with a new link to the new binary. However any shortcuts copied from the installed Desktop shortcut do not get updated.

The current work around is to create a manual shortcut pointing to the installed VaultGUIClient.exe. This shortcut will survive all upgrades to the executable.

I'll do that once and for all! Thanks, Jeff! At least I'm not going crazy (well, suspect that may be).

It's probably an "advertised shortcut". I don't know the technical details about them (I leave that to my release engineer), but I do know that advertised shortcuts contain information about the EXE itself, and break when the EXE is replaced with a different version.

It's just annoying, that's all. I get it now.
