Error 1606. Could not access network location \inetpub\wwwRoot

I'm getting the above error when trying to install Valut using "VaultServer_3_1_9.msi". I'm logged on as an administrator and the directory does exist, why would it fail with this error?

Make sure that the .msi is located on the destination machine itself rather than somewhere else on the network.

Also make sure that SYSTEM has full control permissions on the directory where the .msi is located and to the temp directories on that machine (%windir%\temp and %temp%).

The msi is in c:\ and SYSTEM appears to have full access to everything.

What OS are you installing on? Are you using Remote Desktop or anything similar to do the install?

What version of Windows installer is on your machine (start->run->msiexec should display the windows installer version information)?

Are you using Remote Desktop or VNC or anything similar to do the install or are you at the machine itself?

Does SYSTEM have permissions to c:\inetpub\wwwroot?

I'm at the machine itself, no remote desktop or vnc.

I've got Norton AntiVirus, could that be "protecting" the directory some how? I've turned off auto-protect but that makes no difference.

SYSTEM has Full Control on c:\inetpub\wwwroot

When you install, on the Select Feature dialog, when you select the server component does the path say /inetpub/wwwroot or does it say c:\inetpub\wwwroot?

If it is trying to install to just /inetpub/wwwroot, that could be the problem (I just assumed were talking about c:\inetpub\wwwroot). You could try actually browsing to the c:\inetput\wwwroot directory in the Select Feature dialog to make sure that it has the correct path.

It looks like one cause of this error is the shell paths aren't correct on your machine. Verify that all of the shell paths in the registry are correct:

The install program never displayed the options page, it never got that far. And yes it didn't have C: at the start.

The value in this regisrty entry appears to have been the problem:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InetStp\PathWWWRoot

After adding C: to the \inetput\wwwRoot the installer now starts.

Any idea what may have caused this value to be wrong?

I have no idea what could have caused the registry problem. The Microsoft KB article doesn't say what causes it.

I don't recall any one reporting that error particular before. I just did a search on the error you were seeing and found the KB article, so the problem is new to me.
