I'm using Vault 3.1.8 on Windows Server 2003 R2 64 bit. The Vault webservice is running on the 2.0 framework in a 32-bit worker process with it's own AppPool.
Using both Visual Studio 2003 and the Vault GUI client to connect to the server works just fine except for one small detail: The checkbox to "automatically connect using this profile" sometimes doesn't "stick". If I check the box and connect, then shut down and restart the client, I sometimes get a message box that says "the user name or password is incorrect", after which I choose the very same profile, re-check the checkbox to automatically connect next time, and proceed to connect without any problem. I generally see this message when I've shut down the client on one day and opened it again the next day. Simply closing and re-opening the client works fine. In the cases that I've noted this problem, I was running the client on the same machine as the server, in case that matters.
I didn't see anything in the 3.1.9 release notes that seemed related, so here I am.

This could be a known bug. If you connect with a profile in the IDE, it clears the "automatically connect" setting in the GUI client profile. Could this be what you are experiencing? The checkbox to "automatically connect using this profile" sometimes doesn't "stick".
